It is easy to fall into rhythm and comfort when we create art and our goal is to keep our work fresh and inspired. So the question then is how do we continue to grow, to challenge ourselves, and continually fall in love with our craft?
One of our favorite books Mastery by Robert Greene opens with a great Goethe quote:
Every 6-8 weeks we convene a group of collaborative artists to work on molding and cultivating our collective crafts, creating art together. And in this group we operate on some simple principles aimed at keeping routine and apathy at bay:
- Embrace feeling like a rookie again, at the beginning of our artistic journey
- Chase after the resistance and pain associated with new possibilities (“the impossible”)
- Submit to failure as a mentor
- Improve through trial-and-error
This last week we selected a collective concept to push our boundaries and foster growth: “paint.”
Denver Paint Photography: Behind the Scenes with The Crew
We have a great group of artists who come together for these days. We have fun and in this case, make a mess.
Hair & Makeup: Tori Apodaca (Bronze & Beautiful) & Sabrina Deemer
Models: Roberta A., Erika KG, and Kayla P.
Photographers: Tyler & Tiffany Martin, Tony Clapp, and Don Hales
We all help each other out with individual concepts and get each other “unstuck” when things are going right.
Denver Paint Photography: The Results
Some of the planned concepts do not work out. We wanted to motion blur paint around one of our models heads and we could not drag the shutter enough to create the effect last week. So we substituted a different concept. It does not mean we are done trying to figure out how to create the original effect. We simply figured out what will not work. So we will try it again another time.
Regardless, the result was lots of learning, a fun (exhausting) day, and some art we are proud of.
We can not wait for the next session and to share what we do then!
